On February 16th, 2022, the San Antonio Surf Soccer Club has named Matio Dimov as the head coach of our WPSL team ahead of the 2022 Season, where the team will compete in the Red River Conference Southern Division against AHFC Royals, Challenge Red Devils, Corinthians FC SA, Houston Aces, Lonestar FC, and the San Antonio Blossoms. Matio Dimov offers an extensive playing and coaching background. During his playing career, Dimov began playing in his home country of Bulgaria in a professional academy, where he would play all age groups from the U14 side all the way to the senior team.In 2015, he had the opportunity to play for Seacoast United in Maine (NPSL) for two seasons. After those years, Dimov played for two NAIA Universities and for the New York Athletic Club (NPSL). In his second season with New York Athletic Club, Matio Dimov was named the captain of the team and was nominated for best midfielder in the conference. He would then go on to play professionally for the Michigan Stars. Dimovs coaching career started for Seacoast United, where he coached all ages from U8 to elite High School players. This past year, Matio Dimov completed his master’s degree in Sport Management from Brooklyn College, which is part of the City University of New York system. Coach Dimovs favorite aspect of the Surf Family is how everyone within the family welcomed him in such a friendly manner and has helped him adapt to life in Texas, which he is thankful for. When asked if he had anything to say to our potential WPSL players, Dimov said The one thing that I would like to say to our potential players is that WPSL is a great opportunity to prepare them for their college team experience and their future professional soccer careers. There are very many pro players who once played in the WPSL.San Antonio Surf Sporting Director Brian Davis spoke about having Dimov take on the role of WPSL Head Coach; We are excited that Coach Matio will be leading the WPSL team this coming season. He has a proven track record as a player and coach. The experience as a player and the desire to compete and for his teams to compete in each and every match is something I’m looking forward to seeing within the team this year. Expect to see Coach Matio at spring college games as he begins recruiting key players for this season. Our tryouts have always been a way that we have found hidden talent within San Antonio and we are looking forward to seeing who comes out this year. We have a reputation of playing younger players in each of our first 2 seasons and looking forward to giving those players the opportunity again this year.”

Tryouts for the WPSL season will be held between March 12th and March 18th with more details to be announced soon. If you have any questions regarding the WPSL program, please contact Aidan Reagh via email at
