San Antonio Surf Highlights of the Month: January 2022

By Aidan Reagh, 02/01/22, 2:45PM CST

For those of you who follow us on social media, you may have seen a few recent posts highlighting some of the wonderful accomplishments our players and staff are enjoying. As we have come back from our winter holidays, we can view the successes of our Surf Family as something to build upon. We can also savor the successes because we are incredibly proud of our team. Going forward, we will put together a monthly column that will serve as a summary of some of the great things we saw throughout the previous month. We hope you enjoy reading about these highlights as much as we enjoyed experiencing them.

Players Continuing Their Careers

We are fortunate enough to be graduating three players who will be playing college soccer. All three play on our 2003 Surf ECRL team, coached by Rick Kuchka. Chloe Ramirez has committed to play at West Virginia Wesleyan. Abby Kone will be playing at Lubbock Christian University. Sydney Holmes will be playing her college soccer at Multnomah University. We are immensely proud of these three players, and we look forward to highlighting our future college commitments!

Players Featured for Their Performances

Alyson Rios has been called up to the upcoming Surf Select National ID Camp. The 2010 midfielder/forward played in Salou, Spain at the Surf Cup International. Alyson was quoted “Last year, I attended the National ID camp in San Diego, the residential camp in Daytona Beach, and had the privilege of playing on the 2010G Surf team at the inaugural 2021 Surf Cup International in Salou, Spain. I’m excited to see my soccer friends, coaches, and make new friends next month in San Diego.”

Jordan Matthews of our 2003 Surf ECRL team was included in Lethal Enforcer Soccer’s Top 20 HS Girls Soccer Performances of the Week thanks to her terrific games at Taft High School. In addition to her feature in the LES Top 20 of the Week, Jordan also was profiled by Athenians NEXT Training Program, which is comprised of local players from around the city of San Antonio.

Alyson and Jordan have made us all Surf Proud, and we look forward to seeing future call-ups and features of our players.

San Antonio Surf is Proud to Develop Talent On and Off the Field

Recently, Harlan and O’Connor High Schools played each other in a thrilling matchup, but there is an interesting catch. The match featured five captains between the sides that play on the same club team… our Surf 03G ECNL – Regional Team. The captains (pictured left to right) are Marliz Valenzuela (Harlan), Kalista Kuchka (Harlan), Chloe Ramirez (O’Connor), Sydney Holmes (Harlan), and Emma Thomas (O’Connor). This team has also developed captains at Brennan (Jordan Beardman and Julia Pace), Taft (Ebony Joseph and MaKyla Peterson), and Uvalde (Abby Kone) High Schools. These are just some of the leaders throughout our club and we take great pride in developing the person, not just the player.

Speaking of Harlan, two Surf players ranked in the top ten of seniors for their academic performances. Congratulations to Marliz Valenzuela and Sydney Holmes for their terrific academic performances. We want to lead the way on and off the field, and these players are doing a fine job of that.

The Coaches Corner

Our players are not the only ones doing great things right now. Coach Joe Roberts was in Kansas City for the United Soccer Coaches Convention, where he also engaged in practical sessions for his Masters of Coaching Education – Soccer from Ohio University. Coach Carlos Miranda completed his U.S. Soccer National B Coaching License, a license that took 6 months to complete. These two coaches have advanced their education to ensure San Antonio Surf is delivering the highest quality and most modern sessions for our players.

On a more personal note, we want to congratulate Coach Matio Dimov, who is expecting a baby soon. As you can see in a photo above, Coach Matio’s 2011 Girls are excited to welcome a new member to the Surf family. The girls pitched in together to buy a few gifts for their coach. To the Dimov family, we are all thrilled for you and wish you happiness and good health!

These are just some of the great things being done every day by Surf Soccer Nation and we cannot wait to highlight more of the exciting things our players and staff are doing next month!
