Melissa Bunker joins San Antonio Surf

San Antonio Surf is excited to add Melissa Bunker, a former San Diego Surf product, to our coaching staff!

“Melissa came to our WPSL tryouts and I could tell right away she was a heck of a player, and she displayed leadership the way she coached and supported her teammates on the field," said WPSL Head Coach and Director of Coaching Brian Davis. "Right before the forced break, she put those leadership skills to work, coaching one of our 2012 academy teams. She will be working with our older aged group girls’ teams where her experience and passion will be a true asset to these players seeking advancement to the next level.”

When asked about coming on staff for San Antonio Surf, Bunker was  excited about the opportunity to give back to the club that gave so much to her, "Hello Surf Family! My name is Melissa Bunker and I am beyond excited to be returning to the white and blue colors. I played with San Diego Surf 2000—2006 and more recently overseas in Australia. I am looking forward to providing the same quality soccer development to my players that I was afforded. If I’m lucky, I might even continue to play!"

“Fortunately for us, Melissa saw our WPSL tryout information and the Surf brand is one that she knows and trusts having grown up playing for San Diego Surf,” said Surf Executive Director Rick Kuchka.  “She’ll be the 11th female coach on our staff and probably the most experienced as a player and I think she’s someone that our players will really look up to.  If we do somehow get the WPSL league off the ground this summer, she is definitely someone fans are going to want to come out and watch as well. “

San Antonio Surf will be fully integrated into the Surf Brand by the start of the 2020 season. San Antonio Surf is devoted to solidifying the best in player development and creating a strong player pathway in San Antonio and joining Surf provides them a clear opportunity to fulfill that mission.

San Antonio Surf features boys and girls recreational, competitive, and amateur teams of all ages, servicing more than 600 players in the greater San Antonio area.  Training, games, and events are held at Alamo Sportsplex/Culebra Creek Soccer Park, a 74-acre complex with 15 full-size fields, owned/managed by the club.  In addition to three large tournaments hosted by the club, Alamo Sportsplex also hosts leagues, Cups, and playoff events for local and state associations.
